Too Much It Would Seem …

For those  studying Macbeth for the Higher English exam this year – well done, it’s been a good time to study it, especially if you’ve been struggling to get to grips with Lady Macbeth and all she represents.

Every time you switch on the news, there she is in all her glory.Think of Hillary as Lady Macbeth if it hadn’t gone wrong; Macbeth just standing a little behind her. The control, the fierce determination, the wanting to win at all costs. Hillary has to all going on.

For other writers’ take on this, have a look here– this last one is particularly good. (And for a laugh, have a look here …)

Of course you can’t draw parallels between the two in your Higher English essay, but it’s a great way to understand the character better.

And I’m a great believer in writing about the woman characters in all critical essays in Higher English Critical Essay – Lady Macbeth, Linda in Death of a Salesman, Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker – Myrtle Wilson, even in The Great Gatsby... you get the picture.

You can really get to grips with them and the themes they embody.  The pleasure as a marker when you pick up an essay that looks at the text from even just a slightly less -than -obvious standpoint cannot be underestimated.

Lady Macbeth, main points then:

  • Overarching ambition
  • her relationship with Macbeth – plot this from beginning to end
  • Lady Macbeth at the end of the play
